An atrocious, horror moovie, which will play in Cascais

Our men at the Town Hall of Cascais have gone mad!! They are offering free entrances to watch the moovie «OPEN WATER 2: ADRIFT» («Pânico em Alto Mar»), on Saturday, October 11th, at Parque Palmela (9:30 pm). It is supposed to make part of an International Exhibit of Sculptures regarding the Sea, but couldn't they have chosen another film?? At least not a horror one!!! I know it is based on true facts, but it will scare people out! Specially those who are affraid of the Sea and those that simply hate ships and maritime matters (yes, they DO exist around here)!!!

Just check out the abstract: «Amy, her husband James and their baby Sarah travel to Mexico to sail in the yacht of their reckless friend Dan with their common friends Zach and Lauren and celebrate the thirtieth birthday of Zach. They are introduced to Dan's girlfriend Michelle and they drink and recall moments of their past while navigating. Miles away from the shore, Michelle suggest to stop the yacht and swim in the calm water. Amy stays in the boat since she has a childhood trauma with ocean and Dan stays with her. Later, the irresponsible Dan pushes Amy overboard, falling with her in a prank. Once in the water, the group realizes that Dan forgot to put the embarkation ladder and the freeboard makes impossible to climb to the main deck the yacht. With the baby alone in the boat and stranded in the open sea, they panic and their desperation lead them to a tragic fight for survival.»

This weekend Cascais hosted a fabulous gathering of beautiful traditional sailing barges from the Tagus, with expositions, conferences, sailing activities for everybody, a bonfire party and, today, a great concert by the Band of Portuguese Navy at Baía de Cascais, followed by a great lunch at the Museum of the Sea (Museu do Mar).

This photo in particular depicts one of Cascais sailing barges, named «Não é desgraça ser pobre» («Being poor is no disgrace»), at Cascais Bay, by night. She is one of the many sailing barges of River Tagus registered at the Tagus Army Official Registration Book, aiming at the preservation of these important and historic ships.

Other traditional sailing barges from the Tagus present today at Cascais were from many friends from Moita and Sarilhos Pequenos, such as the following, by alphabetic order:

1. «Esperança» («Hope»), from Sarilhos Pequenos;
2. «Galdéria», from Sarilhos Pequenos;
3. «Nina», from Moita (the «Dream Team», which includes «Sal», the sailor dog);
4. «Ponta da Marinha», from Sarilhos Pequenos;
5. «Quim Zé», from Moita;
6. «Ruaz», from Sarilhos Pequenos;
7. «Sempre consegui» («I made it, after all»), from Rosário.

The Sports Department of the Municipality of Cascais and the Captain of the Port of Lisbon and Cascais must receive a big applause for the splendid organisation and warm reception offered to all sailors and friends during this unforgettable weekend!

Lisbon Trains

About «Leão Holandês» («Dutch Lion»)

The «[Leão Holandês]» («Dutch Lion») is a classic boat that organizes sailing cruises in Lisbon on the river Tagus or even until Cascais. Her teambuilding or party cruises, incentives, or other events (such as baptisms and even weddings) are always one of the finest I have had the privilege to testimony, along with other ships, such as Lisbon's «Príncipe Perfeito». The «Leão Holandês» makes sailing cruises an event to remember!... Her crew is highly efficient and really nice, just like her owner and captain, Mr. Dirk Willem Gesink, a real Dutch Lion also!!...

She is 35 metres long, 6.2 metres wide and has three masts, a 230-horsepower diesel engine and all the latest navigational and communications equipment, complying with international safety requirements. She is also equipped with double cabins below deck and various toilets and showers. The spacious, stylish lounge, which seats approximately 50 people can be used for both social and business activities. The ample deck space is convenient for various types of events. Meals may be served on deck or below, with a maximum capacity of 75pax on board.

Originally the Leão Holandês was built as a 2-Mast Schooner in the Northern Dutch town of Groningen in 1910 for a German skipper, captain Dehde, who used her as a freighter for wood. At that time she was christened “Amalie”. With this name she was taken to Germany and sawn in two parts at the wharf in Kiel in 1923. The operation served to add 6 metres and one mast to her original 32 meters. Until 1975 the ship was sailed under Danish flag and was then sold to the first Dutch owner. He traced the complete history of the ship obtaining her original blueprint and started to remodel her exactly as she was more than a half century earlier. The ship was then named “Sepha Vollaars” and sailed commercial trips from 1979-1983 in Holland. Sold in 1983, the ship sailed to Tahiti for the new Swiss owner, coming back to Europe 18 months later. By then, much of her beauty was gone.

When the present owners discovered the ship for sale in Belgium it meant an opportunity of a lifetime. They brought her to Portugal and named her «Leão Holandês». Some years later, and after having passed the difficulties of the local licences, the old three-Mast Schooner was once again hosting its sails and cruising Portuguese waters.

Passengers sailing aboard «Leão Holandês» can get official evidence of this unique happening, in the form of a special designed Certificate, before they step off the ship. Also, it is possible to receive one or more Certificates after the Cruise has ended. I have sailed with her twice and will order my Certificates as soon as possible!!!!

Uma recordação do meu primeiro embarque numa canoa do Tejo, a famosa «Canastrinha», do Amigo João Gregório, um dos Cavaleiros da Ordem do Atlântico Azul!!! Fui convidada pelo Amigo João Rodrigues, comigo nas fotografias, em Cascais, em 15 de Agosto de 2005!...

On the second one, His Majesty the King of Norway is being welcome by official authorities, such as the Captain of the Port of Lisbon and Cascais (the Maritime Authority), the Mayor of Cascais, and other representatives from Clube Naval de Cascais and other entities.

Today I also took many photos of Their Majesties arriving to Lisbon Port aboard their Royal Yacht and being welcome by The President of the Republic of Portugal and the First Lady. My camera's battery is empty, so I will only post them later in the evening today. Please DO be patient!!...

«N.R.P. CUANZA»

Photo of Portuguese Navy Ship «CUANZA», taken yesterday at dusk by Sailor Girl. This beautiful ship was protecting the Royal Yacht «Norge» at Cascais Bay.

«O N.R.P. "CUANZA", indicativo NATO P 1144, é o quinto dos dez navios patrulhas da classe "Cacine". Foi construído nos Estaleiros Navais do Mondego na Figueira da Foz, sendo o início da construção em 1969. Foi aumentado ao efectivo dos navios da Armada em 4 de Junho de 1970, tendo sido o 1TEN José Manuel Castanho Paes o seu primeiro Comandante. O seu nome, Cuanza, é proveniente de um rio de Angola, que nasce na meseta central do país (província do Bié) e, depois de percorrer cerca de 970 km (sendo 190 navegáveis), desagua no Oceano Atlântico a cerca de 50 km a sul de Luanda. Durante os primeiros anos o N.R.P. "CUANZA" cumpriu a sua missão em Cabo Verde e na Guiné. A partir de 1975, passou a prestar serviço em Portugal Continental e nas Regiões Autónomas dos Açores e da Madeira.»

And NO, the Portuguese and Norwegian Secret Services did neither arrest me, nor taken my camera away... I was lucky, though, as they would have if only they could. It was a sad episode at my home town and birthplace. I will soon tell you more about it, but the really important fact is the beautiful arrival of Their Majesties the King and the Queen of Norway to Cascais...

The following post written in Portuguese refers to the arrival to Portugal today of King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway, who will embark aboard their Royal Yacht at 7:20 p.m., which has been anchored at our beautiful Cascais Bay since yesterday!... Furthermore, you may also listen to one of my favourite Norwegian composers, Edvard Grieg, playing today at Radio Atlântico Azul!...

Reis da Noruega iniciam hoje visita de Estado a Portugal

O Rei Harald V e a Rainha Sónia da Noruega iniciam hoje uma visita de Estado de três dias a Portugal a convite do Presidente da República. Os monarcas noruegueses chegam ao princípio da noite de hoje à Marina de Cascais onde embarcam no Iate Real «Norge» («Noruega») que parte amanhã de manhã para Lisboa, dando-se início à visita oficial após atracagem frente à Torre de Belém. Pelo caminho, o Iate Real será escoltado por navios da Marinha Portuguesa e por barcos de recreio. Após o desembarque, os soberanos noruegueses recebem Honras Militares e depõem uma coroa de flores no Túmulo de Luís de Camões no Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, após o que se dirigem para o palácio de Belém para a assinatura do Livro de Honra, apresentação das Delegações e troca de Presentes e Condecorações. Logo depois de um encontro com o Chefe de Estado português, Cavaco Silva e Harald V fazem declarações à imprensa antes do almoço oferecido pelo Presidente da República e mulher aos soberanos noruegueses. A meio da tarde, Harald V concede uma conferência de imprensa, deslocando-se às 15h45 à Assembleia da República onde será recebido pelo Presidente da Assembleia da República e por representantes dos partidos políticos com assento parlamentar.

De seguida está prevista uma visita ao Museu Gulbenkian, pelas 16h30, onde lhes serão apresentadas cenas soltas de peças dos dramaturgos noruegueses Jesper Halle e Arne Lygre e dos portugueses José Maria Vieira Mendes e Miguel Castro Caldas, com música de Morten Halle e direcção de Franzisca Aarflot (da companhia norueguesa Det Apne Teater), no Centro de Arte Moderna José de Azeredo Perdigão. A interpretação estará a cargo dos actores Andreia Bento, Elsa Galvão, Sylvie Rocha, João Meireles, António Filipe, Pedro Carraca, Cecília Henriques, Sérgio Conceição, António Simão, Pablo Malter, Ricardo Batista e Paulo Pinto.

Um Banquete oferecido pelo Presidente da República e mulher no Palácio da Ajuda encerram a agenda de amanhã.

Na Quarta-feira, Harald V profere um discurso durante um seminário económico e visita depois uma grande superfície comercial em Lisboa. De seguida visita à Câmara Municipal de Lisboa onde o presidente do município, António Costa, profere um discurso de boas vindas, seguido pelo monarca, antes da cerimónia de cumprimentos do Corpo Diplomático acreditado em Lisboa. O almoço desse dia é oferecido pelo Primeiro-Ministro aos reis da Noruega na residência oficial, no Palácio de São Bento.

A tarde dos monarcas é dedicada à cultura com uma deslocação ao Teatro Municipal S. Luiz onde participam num seminário literário seguido por um concerto de Jazz oferecido pelos Reis da Noruega no Convento do Beato. Assim, pelas 15h30, no Jardim de Inverno do Teatro Municipal São Luiz, serão lançados três livros: "Teatro II", de Ibsen, editado pela Cotovia, e "Sou o Vento, Sono" e "O Homem da Guitarra" (Livrinhos de Teatro n.º 33), do dramaturgo norueguês Jon Fosse - de quem os Artistas Unidos encenaram várias peças - e que estará presente, cuja apresentação será feita pela rainha Sonja da Noruega.

Segue-se a leitura de alguns excertos desses textos pelos actores Maria João Luís e Pedro Lima, o actor, encenador e director artístico dos Artistas Unidos, Jorge Silva Melo, e o actor e encenador Manuel Wiborg, acompanhados ao piano por Anne Kaasa, que interpretará "Noite de Tempestade no Mar", Opus 55, nº3 da Suite Peer Gynt II, de Edvard Grieg.

Às 16:30, o tema "Ibsen e Fosse em Tradução" reunirá numa mesa-redonda Luís Miguel Cintra (actor, encenador e director do Teatro da Cornucópia), Terje Merli (encenador), Berit Gulberg (agente literária), Solveig Nordlund (encenadora que introduziu Fosse em Portugal) e Pedro Porto Fernandes (tradutor de Ibsen, Fosse, Lygre, Halle e outros), com moderação de Jorge Silva Melo.

No final, pelas 18:30, Manuel Wiborg e Pedro Lima farão uma leitura da peça "Sou o Vento", com tradução de Pedro Porto Fernandes.

O programa oficial termina com um banquete que os reis oferecem a Cavaco Silva e mulher no Iate Real «Norge», no Cais de Santa Apolónia.

Na Quinta-feira visitam o Instituto de Patologia e Imunologia Molecular da Universidade do Porto, após o que são recebidos na Câmara Municipal da cidade onde o Presidente da autarquia, Rui Rio, e o soberano discursam. Um encontro com a imprensa e um passeio no barco «Douro Azul», com almoço a bordo, encerram a visita de Estado dos monarcas a Portugal.
