After a beautiful sunshine today in Lisbon, a full moon can now be observed in Lisbon's sky. So why does my heart feel so bad?... I wish I were sailing...

To Clarice de Saint Malo & To all Friends all over the World

These photos depict Lisbon as viewed from the River Tagus (# 1) and the Training Ship BELEM, a beautiful French Tall Ship (almost as beautiful as [CREOULA] hehehe), at Saint Malo (# 2). You CAN and SHOULD take a look at their Programme for this coming Spring and Summer [HERE].
As a quick outlook, please note that:
  • Belem will be open to public on the following ports (Le Belem sera ouvert au public dans les ports suivants): a) 30 March 2008: Brest; b) 06 April 2008: Saint Malo; c) 19 April 2008: Calais; d) 08 May 2008: La Rochelle. She will be the guest of honour of this french city, from where she will depart to the Atlantic Crossing to Québec. Belem est l'invité d'honneur de La Rochelle, qui l'accueillera dans le Vieux port pour participer aux festivités du départ de la Grande Traversée La Rochelle – Québec.

I wish I were a Lisbon Ferry...

Photo by Sailor Girl of our Lisbon's beautiful River Tagus
(Click on the picture to enlarge it)
I wish I were a Lisbon Ferry
Tumblin’ on the seas
Far away from dry land
And it’s bitter memories
Driving out my sweet wheel
With abandonment and love
No ceiling bearin’ down on me
’cept the starry sky above
With light in my head, you in my arms
Woohoo!!!...
Well I know I will be loosened
From bonds that hold me fast
That the chains all hung around me
Will fall away at last
And on that fine and fateful day
I will take me in my hands
I will ride on the ferry
I will be the ferry man
With light in my head
You in my arms
Woohoo!!!

[CREOULA], sailing off from Lisbon to Cascais in 1988...
(Photo by Luís Miguel Correia, posted today at our joint blog)
I’ve been tagged by [Gordon], from Adelaide (South Australia) to play along in the New Year's Resolution game. He was tagged by Carol Anne of [Arkansas Times]. Here is how the game goes:
When it comes to New Year’s Resolutions we seem to fall into four categories:
  1. Quite serious about them;
  2. Flippant about them;
  3. Pressured to do them; or
  4. Do not do them.
So, the purpose of this little game is to let us know which category you are in. I will give mine, then tag 3 other sites to do the same thing. I think I fall into category 3 (though sometimes I do not do them at all). I have a couple of ongoing goals/resolutions which are to take my driver's licence, to eat less chocolates, to quit smoking, to go on vacations, preferably aboard my favourite ship «CREOULA». To achieve these I will probably need psichological support... And a little help from my Friends!!...
Now to tag three others: Luís Miguel Correia, from [Ships & The Sea] (Lisbon), Teresa from [Caniche Vagabundo] and Velas do Tejo, from [Academia de Vela].
If you haven’t already, go check out their sites, as well as Gordon's and Carol Anne's!!! Not forgetting [CREOULA]...

Lisbon's stone today is soakin' wet!!...

I'm running out of Lisbon photos of my own, but please do not pannic!... This one was taken at night with my mobile phone. It is not such a good photo, but the message is clear: it represents the state-of-the-art in what new technologies applied to weather forecasting concern. You may use a similar stone in your own city! Have fun!...

In this picture, from right to left: Mr. Amândio, the former Chairman of Centro Náutico Moitense; the Captain of Lisbon Port; Sailor Girl, with a flag of this blog ("Yes, my blog has a flag! What about yours?!" LoooooL); the former C.E.O. and former President of Associação Naval Sarilhense; and the Pretendant to the Portuguese Crown (a very special Friend of the People who sail in the Tagus River) on a ceremony on 1st December 2006.
This was a very special day to all Sailors of the Tagus Fleet. After a long day with ceremonies throughout the country, His Royal Highness Duarte Pio de Bragança still managed to travel to Moita, where this ceremony took place, and honour everybody with his presence, having been in charge to give the prizes to sailors who participated on the Royal Race of the Tagus.
And now, I take the opportunity to post a few amazing pictures of some of my favourite maritime paintings!! I am affraid to post them at another page, as I guess that at City Daily Photoblog we should make only one reference per day to our city... And, when posting several articles, this blog keeps appearing several times with different pictures, some of them nothing having to do with Lisbon. If you know how to manage this problem, please advise me!...
Ship Portrait of the Danish Brig "Dorothea af Ebeltoft, Captn. A. Carlsen" 1865, the vessel is showing off Christiansoe (near Bornholm), signed inscribed with title along the bottom and dated, Oil on canvas, 45 x 65 cm, possession of a Private Collector in Northern Germany. In several of his pictures Reimers used light colors and depicted the vessel in a sunshine situation. Click on the image to see a larger illustration. Photo Copyright is with the Fine Art Emporium.

Ship Portrait of the German Steamer "Anton von Kiel - Capt. E. Aereboe" at sea off Hong Kong 1890 - the steamer is shown in the Chinese Sea with two junks in the background - Oil on canvas on original stretcher, 53 by 77 cm, with frame 65 x 88 cm - signed "Heinrich Reimers", dated 1890 and inscribed with title as shown above - cleaned, smaller areas with retouch only, in good condition, in the original frame - Private Collection Portugal. Reimers was a Captain and Pilot himself and worked in Kiel as a ship portrait artist. The steamer "Anton" was owned by the shipping company "Sartori & Berger" in Kiel and was obviously used for coastal trade in Far East. This is a light color painting with a romantic touch in the sky and an interesting background. It represents a typical and well done ship portrait by this known artist. Click on the image to see larger illustrations.

Ship Portrait of a Royal Yacht Club Sailing Yawl at sea ca. 1895 - the large sailing yacht is shown under full sail at moderate sea - Oil on board, 55 by 82 cm - signed lower left "T.G. Purvis" and inscribed "Cardiff". Purvis was a busy ship portrait artist, working in Cardiff, London and Bristol. He portrayed some of the largest sailing vessels which ever crossed the Oceans. Portraits of Yachts by him - such as this one - are rare. Most of his paintings were executed between 1890 and the Great War (1914). This painting shows a realistic sea and a detailed handling of the large Yacht, which flies the burgee of a Royal Yacht Club (British or Irish) on the main mast.

PHOTO OF A PORTUGUESE FLAG FLYING HIGH OVER THE TAGUS THROUGHOUT LISBON'S BEAUTIFUL SKY!!!

«HEROES of the SEA, Noble People, BRAVE and Immortal NATION! Raise up high today and once again the SPLENDOUR of Portugal!!... From the mists of memory, Oh Homeland we hear the voices of your great forefathers that shall lead us to VICTORY!!... (CHORUS) To arms, to arms!!! On land and sea!!! To arms, to arms!!!To fight for our Homeland!!! March against the cannons!!! Unfurl the UNCONQUERABLE flag in the bright light of your SKY! Cry out to all Europe and the whole World that PORTUGAL HAS NOT PERISHED!!! Your happy land is kissed by the OCEAN that murmurs with LOVE. And your conquering arm has given NEW WORLDS TO THE WORLD!!! (CHORUS) Salute the SUN that rises on a smiling future: let the echo of an insult be the signal for our revival!!!... The rays of that powerful dawn are like a mother's kiss that protect us and support us against the insults of fate. (CHORUS).» (english translation by Sailor Girl of the Portuguese National Anthem)
