MARCH 2010 - THEME DAY

(Photo by Sailor Girl)
Today's Theme Day at CDPB is... PASSAGEWAY. I chose this one, used mainly by seagulls and tugs by the Tagus River. Unfortunatelly, the tug in the picture («Caramujo») has recently been sold to Angola, along with «Montevil». They will sail away soon and will both be missed. A contribution to CDPB, wishing you a really Happy Day, all over the World!... Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

OCTOBER 2009 - THEME DAY

(Photo by Sailor Girl)
Today's Theme Day at CDPB is... CONTRAST!... And what a contrast, this one!... From left to right, with «Amadea» in the middle, «Gavião dos Mares» («Hawk of the Seas», of Ricardo "Russo" Conduto) and «Princesa do Tejo» («Princess of the Tagus», of Bruno "Seawolf" Nobre) during the II Edition of the Royal Race of the Typical Sailing Barges of River Tagus!... THEME DAY - «BIG» & MY WORLD TUESDAY # 38

BIG NEWS IN PORTUGAL, BACK IN APRIL 1944: WE MISTERIOUSLY RAN OUT OF PORTUGUESE TOBACCO!!! BUT NOT OF FOREIGN TOBACCO, AND THIS WAS QUITE SHOCKING THEN!!!...
A contribution both to THAT'S MY WORLD TUESDAY AND to Theme Day at CDPB today (the theme is... «BIG»), automatically posted today. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants * Este post, publicado automaticamente, é um contributo simultâneo para o THAT'S MY WORLD TUESDAY e para o Tema do Dia no CDPB (o tema é... «GRANDE»).

ABC WEDNESDAY - # 25 (X)

(Photos downloaded from the internet)
«X» is for «XANADU», another fabulous cruise ship that unfortunatelly was laid up and is «EMPTY»....
A double contribution both to ABC Wednesday and to July's Theme Day at CDPB, the City Daily Photo Blog Community, where the Theme is «EMPTY»! Click here to view thumbnails for all participants at July's Theme Day.

THEME DAY # 14: PATHS AND PASSAGES

(Photo by Sailor Girl)
Hello, Mates!!!... Today is Theme Day at [CDPB], our City Daily Photo Blog Community around the Planet!!... The February theme concerns Paths and Passages. It was a difficult choice for me. I thought about the maritime Passage to India, which was discovered by the Portuguese; about some beautiful Passages of the Holy Bible, which can be found in paintings and Monuments around Lisbon; about the typical Portuguese street pavements (where we, girls, get our heels permanently stuck), and so on and so forth. I hope you liked the choice, though one of my favourites still is a photo I named «Pathway to Heaven» but had already posted ([HERE])... Have a nice Day, my Friends and do not forget to Click here to view thumbnails for all participants!...

THEME DAY # 13: CIRCLES AND SPHERES

(All images were downloaded from the internet)
Today is Theme Day at [CDPB], our City Daily Photo Blog Community around the Planet!!... The theme this month concerns circles and spheres. Well, today is also a National Holiday in Portugal as we are cellebrating the restoration of the Independence of Portugal in 1640, after 60 years of Spanish domination.
Thus, I decided to post a photo of a Portuguese Armillary Sphere, which is present in many monuments and in the modern flag of Portugal, having been a national symbol since the reign of D. Manuel I, the 14th King of Portugal (May 31, 1469 – December 13, 1521), who also used it in the flag of the Portuguese Royal House of Aviz-Beja.
King Manuel supported the Portuguese Navigations and the development of Portuguese commerce. During his reign, the following was achieved:
  • 1498 — Vasco da Gama discovered the maritime route to India;
  • 1500 — Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil;
  • 1505 — Francisco de Almeida became the first viceroy of India;
  • 1503-1515 — Admiral Afonso de Albuquerque secured the monopoly of the Indian ocean and Persian Gulf maritime routes for Portugal.
Finally, I take the opportunity to post the Anthem of the restoration of the Independence of Portugal, on the above image (click to better read the lyrics) and now playing at Radio Atlântico Azul!...

THEME DAY # 12: BOOKS

Today is Theme Day at [CDPB], our City Daily Photo Blog Community around the Planet. The theme is about books and the first thing that occurred to me were those at [Library of Ajuda] (from where I downloaded this photo), at the National Palace of Ajuda (Palácio Nacional da Ajuda), another beautiful monument in Lisbon. The Palace was built during the 19th century to be a residence for the Kings of Portugal. [Click here to view thumbnails for all participants]!!...

Lisbon signs - No, please! Or may be not!...

(Photos by Sailor Girl)
I totally forgot to register this blog on [CDPB]'s July Theme Day!... But I just couldn't stand to be left outside alone!! So here goes my «informal» participation: a photo of a Lisbon sign taken on the top of the street on the second photo, asking us to please walk on the other side of the pavement due to works in progress. I guess that was the reason why those two men over the tram decided to travel like that! Aren't we so clever? We obeyed the sign while ignoring it at the same time!!! LOL!!!...

June Theme Day: «My favourite corner local shop»

(Photos by [Luís Miguel Correia])
Today is Theme Day at CDPB - City Daily Photo Blog Community. The theme is about our favourite corner local shop. This used to belong to my family. It used to supply and distribute groceries throughout its Lisbon's Groceries Shops (Mercearias Vale do Rio) and wine throughout the World. Then came the «radical lefties» (one of them now in a very confortable position in Brussels) and, well, you know what happened then... Now it is very rare to see an old good street grocery shop...

TODAY'S THEME DAY AT CDPB: NUMBERS

These are my favourite numbers in Lisbon and around the Planet, depicting the seventieth anniversary of the most beautiful four-masted Tall Ship in the World, [CREOULA], built in Lisbon in 1937!!!... Other beautiful numbers I found in Lisbon are painted on ships' hulls and dock ladders!! They look great, don't they??...
I also found an interesting article [here] regarding Numbers, as follows: «The numbers we all use (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) are known as "Arabic" numbers to distinguish them from the "Roman Numerals" (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, etc). Actually the Arabs popularized these numbers in the early 9th century C.E. (mainly through the work in Baghdad of al Khawarzimi who was born in Uzbekistan) but they were originally used by the early Phonecian traders to count and keep track of their trading accounts. But have you ever thought why «1» means one and «2» means two? The roman numerals are easy to understand, but what was the logic behind the phonecian numbers? It's all about angles! If one writes the numbers down (see below) on a piece of paper in their older forms, one quickly sees why.
Therefore, number 1 has one angle. number 2 has two angles. Number 3 has three angles. Number 4 (which used to be written +) has four angles. Etc. And "O" has no angles! Interesting, isn't it? An ancient phonecian manuscript explains this and I thought it to be fascinating.»

There is also WATER in the parks!!

Took these photos today at a quick stroll after lunch at the gardens of [Calouste Gulbenkian's Foundation] in Lisbon!...

And, guess what?? Found out there is LIFE out there!!!... LoooL!!...

Beijinhos!!...
Water? You mentioned WATER?!... Congratulations!!! You came to the right city!!! The people from Lisbon are specialists in what water concerns!... There is plenty of water in River Tagus (Lisbon). And we keep refilling it so that all ships, specially the BIG ones, continue calling our port and being able to pass under the Bridge. There is also plenty of water in the bottom of the Ocean, the Atlantic Blue!... All photos by Sailor Girl. Please take a look at the other cities from CDPB who have joined Theme Day until now:

March Theme Day: Graffiti and Street Murals

(Photo # 1 - Grafitti of Fernando Pessoa, one of the World's best poets, at Chiado)

(Photo # 2 -Also at Chiado and Bairro Alto. A sign used by tourists visiting Lisbon which guides them throughout the nice bars and restaurants)

(Photo # 3 - A beautiful tile mural at Cervejaria Trindade, between Chiado and Bairro Alto, where you can eat some of the best steacks, the best seafood and the best wines in Lisbon)

(Photo # 4 - Beautiful tile mural by Almada Negreiros, inside the Tribunal de Contas)

Hello Friends & Fellows of CDPB around the World!!! It's theme day again and I have chosen to post some Lisbon grafittis and mural paintings and tiles!!!...
