Photo by Sailor Girl of the pavement in front of the monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos, in Belém, Lisbon). It features a mosaic decoration (a gift from South Africa in 1960) showing a world map with the routes of various Portuguese explorers inside a wind rose.

A very nice mosaic. I am glad the explorers were or are recognized in this permanent way. Nice photo too.

Wow! I thought it was a small medallion size mosaic and didn't realize how large it was until I enlarged it and saw the people walking across it. Absolutely gorgeous. Are there any other mosaics as large as this?
